The new Casa de Tamales restaurant in the Tower District celebrates its grand opening Tuesday, July 21.

The event will double as a fundraiser for the Valley Animal Center, which will bring some pets up for adoption.

A ribbon-cutting led by Fresno City Council Member Esmeralda Soria starts at 3 p.m. and the grand opening starts at 4 p.m. The first 40 customers will get certificates for varying amounts of tamales each month good for one year.

Casa de Tamales moved from West Shaw Avenue to the 609 E. Olive Ave. location, taking over the space Charlotte’s BakerEatery left behind when its owners retired.

Casa de Tamales makes both traditional tamales and modern, dessert and vegan tamales that are gluten free. The restaurant will also serve tapas, including tortas, fish tacos and other light meals.
