I'm picky about my home decor, and that includes having clocks on my walls. Though some may find it old-fashioned, I consider it to be rather timeless (pun totally intended). The best part about it is that it can be both aesthetically pleasing and a functional asset in your home.

And whoever said that cloaks had to be basic and boring? This DIY by TikTok creator abode.de.joie (@abode.de.joie) uses air-dry clay and a clock kit to let you customize a giant wall clock to fit the vibe in any room of your house.

This clock has been burning a hole in my brain for months! I've been dying to add a clock to this area to help teach my kids to tell time as they learn the days and months and see our schedule in real time. So happy to see the final result! I used polymer clay and resin for the fired clay effect and it's a winner! Our family command center is finally coming together!

Materials List

  • Air-dry clay
  • Clock mechanism kit with hands
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Clay sculpting tools or a toothpick
  • Sandpaper (fine-grit, for smoothing edges once dry)
  • Sealant or varnish
  • Wall adhesive or Command strips
  • Pencil and measuring tape (for spacing numbers evenly on the wall)

You can find air-dry clay, paint, and most of your other materials at craft or dollar stores. The clock kit with hands may need to be ordered online if your local craft store doesn't carry it.

Steps To Make It

  1. Cut the dough into 15 equal portions (one for each number 1-9 and 2 for numbers 10-12).
  2. Roll and shape the numbers out.
  3. Let pieces air-dry fully according to package instructions.
  4. Sand gently to smooth out the numbers (if you want).
  5. Paint numbers.
  6. Seal with varnish for durability in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside.
  7. Mount the clock mechanism in the center of the wall with wall adhesive or Command strips.
  8. Arrange and adhere numbers around it in a circle, adjusting spacing with the measuring tape. Use wall adhesive or Command strips.

Why You'll Love It

This DIY lets you create a statement piece for the wall without shelling out a ton for a giant clock. Mounting this clock doesn't require a lot of damage to the wall, either. This could be renter-friendly if attached with command strips, or it could be a permanent display in your home or garden.

If you buy an outdoor clock kit with hands and use weather-protecting sealant, this could make an amazing outdoor piece mounted on the side of your house, garage, or fence. If you decide to put it outside, make sure all your components are weather-proof.

If you have a large enough tree in your yard, you could make one of these for that and create a small fairy village underneath for whimsy. The appeal of this project is that it's low-effort but completely customizable to your style.

Where Will Yours Go?

So, where will you put this clock? The original creator made it bright and colorful for a child's playroom, but yours could be anything. Personally, I'd love gold numbers with vines creeping around the outside for a garden theme, but your creation is completely up to you.
