Restaurant company's sudden shutdown erases 300-plus Bay Area jobs

SAN JOSE — The sudden shutdown of several restaurants operating as LB Steak, Meso Modern Mediterranean, and Petite Left Bank has erased more than 300 jobs in the Bay Area, an official state government notice shows.

San Jose-based Vine Hospitality, principal owner and operator of the restaurants, scrambled to find a cash infusion to ward off the financial collapse, according to a WARN notice filed with the state Employment Development Department.

“Vine Hospitality worked hard to try to find additional investors or capital to support continued restaurant operations,” Alistair Levine, chief executive officer with Vine Hospitality, wrote in the WARN letter.

It wasn’t immediately clear when efforts began to keep the restaurant company afloat.

“Unfortunately, this effort failed, which resulted in insufficient cash to continue operations,” Levine wrote.

The WARN notice detailed layoffs at seven dining establishments in the Bay Area, affecting workers in San Jose, Menlo Park, San Ramon, Larkspur, and Tiburon. The cuts include 343 jobs at seven restaurants and 12 at the management company.

The Vine Hospitality layoffs include 73 jobs at Left Bank Santana Row, 59 at LB Steak Santana Row, and 44 at Meso Modern Mediterranean in San Jose; 51 jobs at LB Steak Bishop Ranch in San Ramon; 54 at Left Bank Larkspur and 20 at Left Bank Tiburon, both in Marin County; and 42 at Left Bank Menlo Park.

The layoffs are all slated to take effect this week and were described as permanent.

“None of these businesses participated in unions,” Levin wrote in the WARN letter.
