SF's biggest July Fourth fireworks show in decades comes with one catch

Next month, America will celebrate its 250th anniversary on the Fourth of July, and a major San Francisco celebration just got added to the list of festivities. For the third time in history, fireworks will be launched from the Golden Gate Bridge in honor of the event.

According to a news release from Mayor Daniel Lurie's office, "the free, public display will begin at approximately 9:30 PM and will be visible from vantage points across San Francisco and the Bay Area." The question in many locals' minds is, however, will they really be visible?

While not as notorious as "Fogust," Fourth of July fireworks in the city are still often foiled by their own moniker: "No-Sky July." Redditors are already chiming in about the potential for disaster. "Will be about a 50-50 shot karl doesn't spoil the show," one user wrote. But Karl be damned, the city is betting big on the spectacle, with another hefty tourism boost in mind.

"The historic fireworks display builds on the Lurie administration's work to welcome visitors to San Francisco, with tourism on track to break records in 2026 following San Francisco International Airport's busiest-ever Memorial Day," reads the release.

The Golden Gate Bridge is slated to be shut down from 8:30 p.m. to just after the event. Bridge sidewalks and the south-end parking lot are also set to experience closures.

Fireworks will be launched from two barges - one by the Golden Gate Bridge and another near Pier 39 - and between the two towers on the east side of the bridge, according to the release. Unlike prior years, the show won't be viewable from the Ferry Building or the Embarcadero waterfront.

The two other times fireworks have been launched from the iconic landmark were to celebrate the bridge's 50th and 75th anniversaries in May 1987 and May 2012. While both of those shows were visible to folks, skeptics wonder if the July extravaganza will just result in loud explosions lighting up a foggy sky.
