June 18 A-E Source: Sargent Tucker and The Militia set for Red Man's Hall
Sargant Tucker and The Militia will march centerstage and perform a mixed bag of genres ranging from blues, jazz, soul, and more at The 4th Corner Speakeasy at Red Man's Hall on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Tucker has received a number of accolades for his Al Jarreau cover of "We're in This Love Together," which charted No. 1 on the Urban Influencer Chart in the U.S. in November, and his single "U ... Can't Text Love Away" Radio Mix is currently charting on the Urban Influencer R&B and Soul Chart at No. 9.
Tucker has garnered 20,200 monthly listeners on Spotify. "U ... Can't Text Love Away" alone has over 20,000 streams so far.
For his performance on the 20th, Tucker said he would be performing "U ... Can't Text Love Away," which is also the first single to be released from his upcoming album, "You're The One For Me."
"We may even pull out another (single), but right now we're just gonna ride with that one," Tucker said.
The album will be released on vinyl and CD. Some singles will be available on Spotify and Apple Music.
"A lot of it is going to be moved over to Japan in terms of vinyls and stuff," said Tucker. "That's why I pulled at least one single to be available on Spotify and Apple Music. But not all of them will be."
The title "You're The One For Me" came from his producer, Levi Seacer.
Seacer was a former music director for Prince.
Seacer told Tucker that his song "You're The One for Me" reminded him of old school Isley Brothers.
Tucker said the song is about the positivity that comes with having a woman in life.
"No matter what I go through, no matter the trials and tribulations, you're the one for me. And it's more of a funky dance song," said Tucker.
Tucker will be playing a mix of his successful songs from overseas and songs that he's performed in the United States, like covers from Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and Bill Withers.
Although he has performed covers of Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and Al Jarreau, Tucker and the Militia are not a tribute band.
"I'm not a cover guy, but I really appreciate great writers," said Tucker.
His setlist for his upcoming show will include genres covering blues, jazz, R&B, soul, and more.
Tucker curates his setlist based on the analytics he receives on Spotify.
To his surprise, his most popular listener demographic is between the ages of 30 and up.
"I guess a lot of people listen to their parents' music," he joked.
But Tucker's biggest surprise came when he had made a demo of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar?"
"A man I had been working with was close to Anna Gordy Gaye, the older sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy and the first wife of Marvin Gaye," Tucker said. "He came over and said, 'Let me borrow that demo.' The next thing I knew, he was playing it for her over the phone. I was speechless."
Tucker continued, "She was in her 90s at the time. After listening, she said, 'Play that again.' Then she told me, 'You did Marvin good. You did Marvin well.'"
After that conversation, Tucker ran into the studio and made a masterpiece of it.
The remastered single is available on Spotify.
"That's the only reason why I did it, because of that type of recognition from her," Tucker said.
It will also be the ninth track on the upcoming album.
"This is the closest to the Bay that I've been since putting the lineup together. And Jeff Trager and I go way back. (The 4th Corner Speakeasy) is a small, intimate venue, and I like that," said Tucker.
Tucker previously performed in the Bay Area last year at the Historic BAL Theatre in San Leandro and four months ago at the Club Fox in Redwood City.
A QR code will be provided at the show for attendees to download the latest single for free.
Tucker encourages the community to attend the show to enjoy good music and food, and to treat their fathers, too.
"Father's Day is the next day and I think the father would like some blues, a little jazz, and a little soul music. And I think it would be good to feed him and put some food in him," said Tucker.
Tucker's full-length album, "You're The One For Me," will drop this summer.
Advanced tickets for the performance at The 4th Corner Speakeasy are $23. Day-of-event tickets are $28.
