Netflix Quietly Removing Oscar-Winning Biopic of Legendary Rock Band
A biopic centering on one of the greatest rock bands in history will be leaving Netflix in short order.
Fans of Freddie Mercury and Queen will be sad to learn that Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic of the band's rise and personal struggles, leaves the streaming platform next month.
According to What's on Netflix, the film that won four Oscars leaves Netflix on July 1.
What Is 'Bohemian Rhapsody'?
The film dives into the rise of Queen, from its initial formation, addition of Freddie Mercury, the band's meteoric rise to superstardom and all the perils that come with fame and fortune.
"Freddie Mercury -- the lead singer of Queen -- defies stereotypes and convention to become a beloved entertainer; the band's popular songs lead to Queen's rise in the 1970s; after leaving the group to pursue a solo career, Mercury reunites with Queen for the benefit concert Live Aid -- resulting in one of the most memorable performances in rock 'n' roll," reads the synopsis of the film from Rotten Tomatoes.
The biopic won the most awards at the 91st Academy Awards: Best Actor (Rami Malek), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Its four wins topped Best Picture winner Green Book, Black Panther and Roma.
'Bohemian Rhapsody' Received Uneven Reviews
While it cleaned up at the Oscars, the movie received a disappointing 60% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with most calling out the film for its refusal to dive deep into Mercury's tortured life.
"Bohemian Rhapsody is bad in the way a lot of biopics are bad: it's superficial, it avoids complexity, and the narrative has a connect-the-dots quality. This kind of badness, while annoying, is relatively benign," wrote Sheila O'Malley of RogerEbert.com, who gave the film just one of a possible four stars.
"However, the attitude towards Mercury's sexual expression is the opposite of benign. The tensions of being a gay man in the 1970s are not handled, or even addressed. He himself seems unaware of his own sexual desires."
Audiences were more kind to the film, giving it an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.9 out of a possible 10 on iMDB.
