Rod Stewart's San Diego concert canceled at last minute due to sinus infection

Rod Stewart's "One Last Time" tour concert at Chula Vista's North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre Friday night was canceled just 40 minutes before the show's scheduled 7:30 p.m. starting time.

The reason cited was a sinus infection suffered by the famed singer, according to Live Nation, the concert's promoter. No new date has been scheduled for what has been billed as the 81-year-old Stewart's farewell performance here.

Rod Stewart says: ‘I wouldn’t change anything,’ as he reflects on new album, storied career and being one of the ‘older chaps now’

"Following doctor's advice, Rod Stewart is regrettably unable to perform tonight, June 12, at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, due to a recurrence of the sinus infection he recently battled," reads the online statement issued by Live Nation.

Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster will be refunded automatically, according to the statement. Concertgoers who bought their tickets from a third-party reseller, such as StubHub, SeatGeek or VividSeats will need to seek refunds from their point of purchase.

Stewart's sinus infection appears to have come on rather quickly. He earned rave reviews for his sold-out, 25-song Wednesday night concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

A review in The Orange County Register noted that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee's trademark rasp "seemed to have barely lost any of its power over his six decades as a star."

A review in Deadline was similarly enthusiastic: "Stewart prevails as the king of soulful rasp, his signature tenor-baritone evident and glowing."

For those keeping track, Friday's cancellation was not the first time Stewart has pulled out of a San Diego performance at almost the last minute.

During his 1989 "Out of Order" tour, he canceled two consecutive shows at the San Diego Sports Arena (now known as Pechanga Arena San Diego). The first, on July 28 of that year, fell through because of what was reported as a "truck failure." He was booked to play a make-up date the following night but failed to show again, this time citing a throat ailment.
