Five Years Ago Today, 'Spider-Man' Developer Insomniac Games Released One of Its Most Forgotten Games

In 2026, Insomniac Games is widely known as just the Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Wolverine developer. However, that is far from the truth, and the award-winning developer has dabbled in several genres across its 32-year tenure, such as creating the Resistance first-person shooter series, as well as the Spyro series. Now, one of its most forgotten releases is turning five years old.

Today, June 11, 2026, marks the fifth anniversary of the release of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart on the PlayStation 5. The release of Rift Apart was sandwiched between the release of the studio's first major Spider-Man game in 2018, the Miles Morales standalone game in 2020, and the major sequel game, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, in 2023.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is the ninth major installment in the Ratchet and Clank series, which first began on the PlayStation 2. It was the first new game in the series since Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus. A remake of the original game that tied to the movie, simply titled Ratchet and Clank, was also released in 2016.

Players control Ratchet and Clank once again, and a new character named Rivet, as they use creative weapons across different dimensions.

According to Metacritic, Rift Apart is sitting at an impressive 88 metascore, with critics praising the game's writing, weapons, visuals, and platforming mechanics. Many critics cited the game as the first true reason to own a PlayStation 5.

However, compared to the sales of Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequel, the game did not reach the same widespread appeal as those games. Rift Apart has been estimated to have sold around four million units as of December 2023.

Meanwhile, the Marvel's Spider-Man series has sold over 50 million copies, according to Insomniac Games itself. That is to be expected since there are three major Spider-Man games, all of which are available on PlayStation 5 and PC now, compared to just one Ratchet and Clank game, but by sales data, the game (and possibly the series) does not appear to have the widespread appeal that the Spider-Man games do.

Insomniac Games' next title is Marvel's Wolverine, which is releasing on September 15, 2026, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
