Community Field Day returns to Setterquist Park
Families from across Vallejo are invited to join in a day of family fun at the return of a community field day on Friday.
The free event, set for 4-7 p.m. at Setterquist Park, is presented in collaboration with Vallejo-native LaRussell and his independent collective, Good Compenny, Watch Me Grow, Inc., The Ever Wonder, and its parent company, Suite Treatments.
Reflective of a similar field day hosted in June of last year, the event encourages residents to get outside, connect with neighbors, and embrace a little friendly competition through play.
"Field Day is about creating a space where families can gather, kids can play, and our community can connect with valuable resources in a fun and welcoming environment," organizers said in a press release.
The celebration will feature a variety of activities and sports for both youth and adults, including basketball, pickleball, volleyball, family games, music, entertainment, refreshments, and - just like last year - free soft serve.
To help ensure a safe and organized experience, parents and guardians will be required to complete a digital participation waiver for children taking part in activities. A QR code will be available on-site for registration and check-in.
While supplies last, organizers will also provide a free meal to the first 300 attendees.
In addition to recreational activities, community members are encouraged to visit the event's resource fair, which will connect families with local organizations, programs, and services designed to support youth and families throughout the year.
Participating organizations include Watch Me Grow, Inc., Children's Network of Solano County, Lady Echelon Project, Inc., Love The Skin You're In, Inc., Urban Strategies Council, Coach Sarna Flag Football League, National Academy of Athletics, Vallejo Late Night Basketball, and several other community partners.
At last year's event, families and children of all ages mingled while enjoying soft serve under the hot summer sun. Others raced through an inflatable obstacle course, joined in friendly games of volleyball and pickleball, or tossed around a football on the lawn.
The event's location was chosen intentionally. As organizers noted last year, Vallejo native LaRussell wanted to create a community event that felt familiar and accessible. Setterquist Park - located just down the street from his childhood home - was selected as a space that could directly serve its surrounding neighborhood, much like the intimate performances hosted at the Pergola, the backyard venue that over the years has become synonymous with LaRussell's community-centered approach to music.
Organizers hope the event will capture the same welcoming block-party atmosphere and sense of togetherness.
