Fairfield police have identified the 18-year-old killed after a high school graduation ceremony as Jamario Baker, while investigators continued searching for a suspect in the shooting that also wounded three other people.

Baker was killed Wednesday night after a graduation ceremony for Sem Yeto High School at Fairfield High School's Schaefer Stadium, police said. Gunfire broke out about 7:15 p.m. in the parking lot after the ceremony, which drew about 1,000 people.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends, and all those affected during this difficult time," Fairfield police said.

Three other people - ages 11, 20 and 25 - were wounded in the shooting. Police have said the 11-year-old was recovering at a local hospital and that rumors the child had died were false. The identities of the surviving victims have not been released.

Police have not said whether Baker or the other victims were targeted.

Several students told KCRA that Baker was a Sem Yeto graduate. School employees told the station that he also worked as a custodian through a work-study program at the school.

The 11-year-old wounded in the shooting was Baker's sister, according to a family friend who spoke to KTVU. Police have said she was recovering at a local hospital.

The shooting turned a graduation night into a chaotic scene as families and graduates were leaving the stadium and gathering in the parking lot for photos.

Witnesses previously told The Chronicle they heard what sounded like fireworks or party poppers before people began running and screaming. Some described hiding behind vehicles or running toward the school and tennis courts for cover.

The investigation has also prompted questions about security at the ceremony.

Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District spokesperson Ilana Israel Samuels said in an email to The Chronicle on Friday that a request for school resource officer support for the graduation had been left as a voicemail two days before the ceremony on a line that was not checked daily.

The request did not come through the normal process, she said.

Fairfield police said the department has a memorandum of understanding with the district to provide officers for events such as graduations when requested. Police said an attempted request had been made for the Sem Yeto ceremony but was not submitted through established channels, and the department was not aware of it before the shooting.

Fairfield High School's graduation, originally scheduled for Friday at Schaefer Stadium, was moved to Armijo High School. Police also said they were increasing security at upcoming graduation ceremonies.

On Friday, police asked the public to submit any photos, videos or recordings that could help investigators piece together what happened before, during or immediately after the shooting. Investigators said they were seeking cellphone video, dash camera footage, surveillance video, doorbell camera recordings or any other digital evidence.
