Marina to celebrate park reopening
MARINA – Marina is holding a grand reopening celebration for Glorya Jean Tate Park this Saturday, located just off Highway 1 on the corner of Reservation Road and Cardoza Avenue, next to the neighborhoods of northern Marina.
After two years of construction and renovation, the park will be officially open to the public and ready for use. The Marina Police Department has already had to post on Facebook encouraging neighborhood residents to wait until after the grand opening to use the facilities.
According to their website, the park’s updated design “reflects Marina's commitment to outdoor recreation, youth programming and inclusive community spaces.”
The grand opening event begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and will feature activities like face painting and pickleball. The celebration will feature many local partnerships, like Cycle House Bikes in Marina, which will be providing free bike tuneups, food vendors Acai Boys and The Coffee Corner and music from local artist Monterey DJ.
“The park emphasizes safe, accessible and skill-building recreation while providing open space for spectators, families and casual park users," according to Marina Recreation’s website.
Its list of facilities certainly supports that mission. The park features a vast range of equipment including a dog park (with two zones based on size of dogs), a “sports court” with two half basketball courts, two pickleball courts for those of all skill levels, an exercise area with fitness equipment built in, a large turf section as well as eating areas and walkways in and throughout the park. It will also feature a gazebo, a cornhole area, and a “Scout House Building” which will be available for private events. The central focus is a vast new collection of playground equivalent built for all ages, with everything from a small kid’s slide designed after a whale to towering “crow’s nest” play features which rise above the top of the park. Also present is the existing bicycle pump track which made up Phase 1 of the project.
This project is a long-term one for the city of Marina. The pump track was completed in 2021 and has been in use even throughout construction. The final design for the renovated park was approved in June 2024 by City Council.
