Prime Video Quietly Cancels New Show Before It Even Aired

Amazon's Prime Video just canceled a new show before it even aired its first season.

First announced with a series order in November 2025, a new Stargate series was expected to breath new life into the iconic franchise.

The new series hailed from writer, executive producer, and showrunner Martin Gero, who was a writer on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis early in his career.

Why Was New 'Stargate' Series Canceled?

Instead of delivering a new show for the rabid fanbase, though, it found itself on the chopping floor after Amazon executives were reportedly concerned about its direction.

"According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Amazon execs were concerned that Gero's take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise's already dedicated fanbase," Joe Otterson of Variety wrote.

Nellie Andreeva of Deadline revealed, "The decision to pull the plug is made late in the process - I hear the show had completed a 20-week writers room and was in pre-production in the UK."

The new series' vision and creative direction allegedly no longer aligned with Amazon's programming strategy.

Fans Furious With the Decision

Originally launched with Roland Emmerich's 1994 feature film Stargate, the franchise included multiple television series including Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009), and Stargate Universe (2009-2011) and built a strong following.

Fans of the show, and even former casts members like Michael Shanks, took to social media to show their displeasure with the decision.

"You've got to be kidding me. They were doing all the right things, getting the fanbase engaged and excited, and building something which sounded like a new take that would please old and new fans alike. Huge mistake, Amazon," offered a fan.

Both Variety and Deadline speculated the series could live on at Amazon, but with a different show-runner - and likely not any time soon.
