Every parent can relate to the anxiety that comes with teaching our little ones to swim, even pet parents. Despite how long it takes our babies, human and animal, to take to the water, each lesson is a major milestone. For a rescue seal pup named Matcha, learning to swim doesn't come naturally. Thankfully, his expert handlers are on hand for careful swim lessons and celebrations along the way.

In a video taking TikTok by storm, the sweet little seal pup can be seen tentatively approaching the side of the pool at his rescue center. This little one is learning to swim with the same nervousness and anxiety that many human children face. Not all seals are born with an immediate instinct to swim, but Matcha is one brave seal pup.

Matcha's first time swimming at our centre! Yesterday was a big moment: Matcha's very first swim at our rescue centre. And he did so well! He even managed to climb out of the pool all by himself. From now on, we'll practise a little every day so that Matcha can soon swim all on his own with confidence #matcha#sealpup#seals#sealcentre#wec

The Seal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in the Netherlands writes:

"Yesterday marked a significant milestone for Matcha, our resident seal pup, as he experienced his very first swim at our rescue centre. The young seal pup showed remarkable bravery and aptitude during this important step in his rehabilitation. Matcha not only entered the pool but also demonstrated impressive independence by successfully climbing out on his own."

An impressive 2.5 million viewers liked the post and are following Matcha's swim lessons. Nearly 400,000 viewers shared the video, and many rushed to the comment section, joking about the nervous seal pup.

"Matcha does NOT want to be a seal," one quipped.

Another added, "Does Matcha know they are a seal?"

Matcha likely knows he's a seal, but not all seals are born with expert swimming skills. Most are born with an instinct to kick and float, but moving through the water confidently isn't always innate.

Just like humans, seals practice swimming in shallow water, building stamina and learning how to breathe efficiently while in the water. They also need to learn how to navigate currents and develop hunting skills as they grow. No wonder Matcha is nervous with so much to learn.

Congratulations, Matcha. You climbed out of the pool on your own. In no time, you'll be swimming with confidence.
