Beloved Haight Street vintage shop Held Over is abruptly closing after nearly 50 years

Held Over, a longtime Haight Street vintage clothing store and one of the neighborhood's enduring retail fixtures, is closing after about 50 years in business.

The store's final day will be Saturday, the owners said. Remaining merchandise is being sold for $9 per item.

Held Over opened in 1976 at 1543 Haight St. and became known for its rows of denim, jackets, dresses, military surplus, vintage T-shirts and other secondhand clothing. The shop drew generations of San Franciscans, tourists, costume hunters and shoppers looking for affordable vintage pieces in Haight-Ashbury.

The store was part of Retro City Fashions, a local secondhand clothing business run by Werner Werwie. The company also operated Mission Thrift in San Francisco, which closed after 20 years in 2018, and Mars Mercantile on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, which shuttered in 2024.

Held Over was the last of the Retro City Fashions stores still open.

The closure comes as several long-running San Francisco retailers have struggled with changing shopping habits, lower foot traffic and rising operating costs.

For many shoppers, Held Over was a familiar stop on Haight Street, known for its large inventory and relatively accessible prices even as vintage clothing became more curated and expensive.
