Vino Godfather Winery to host first 'Salsa Sunday' of the summer

May 29-High-energy salsa music and dancing will return to Vino Godfather Winery on Sunday as Orquesta Borinquen kicks off this year's "Salsa Sunday" series.

Orquesta Borinquen is led by director Bill Ortega Jr., who also serves as lead trumpet player, corista and percussionist.

Lead vocalist Carlos Xavier is joined by Aaron Routtenberg, Sean Zuniga and Ricky Gomez on percussion, Gil Roman on bass, Marco Montoya on piano and Freddy Gomez on tenor saxophone.

"This band right here is high energy," said Frankie Kennedy Jr, owner of Vino Godfather. "What we look for is, as soon as the music starts until the music stops, that there's not a square inch left on that dance floor."

When it came to band selection, Kennedy says Orquesta Borinquen was "pretty much a no-brainer."

"We have a very awesome patronage and crowd that loves to dance and show their moves," said Kennedy. "We're getting a lot of new patrons, plus all of our local homestead folks that have been here since day one. When it comes to their energy, their crowd integration, and their (music) selection is fantastic."

Kennedy said that "Salsa Sundays" is a continuation of its ongoing "First Fridays" dance party and salsa lesson series.

"First Fridays" features DJ Jay Fresco and B_Elev8ed and their mix of Latin and Afro beats.

When it comes to inclusivity, Kennedy said Vino Godfather Winery is focused on community and making music accessible to all.

"Different varieties and different genres can be shared and complemented by every single walk of life that comes into the building."

Kennedy added that salsa lessons are ways of connecting with the community, along with "learning and growing together."

"From peer to peer, patron to patron, that's how lasting memories are created. What we hear most from folks who have visited is that they felt like they've known everyone, even if it was their first time," Kennedy said.

Frederick's Catering will serve tacos of chicken, beef, and shrimp. Nachos and sides will be offered.

"Salsa Sundays" will take place at Vino Godfather Winery at 1005 Walnut Ave.
