Want to Lose Weight? Boxing While Wearing 'The Mandalorian' Armor Might Do the Trick

When you see the fluid movements of the star warrior known as The Mandalorian on screen, what you're actually experiencing is the combined work of three men: Pedro Pascal-mostly the voice-stuntman Lateef Crowder, and, very prominently, actor Brendan Wayne, grandson of screen legend John Wayne. The latter has helped craft the movements of the Mandalorian since 2019, and his prowess is on full display in the new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu.

But how does one get into shape to play this formidable bounty hunter? And, are there lessons that every man can use from the Mandalorian workout in everyday life? Men's Journal talked to Brendan Wayne himself, as well as his trainer, Frank Trigg, to unpack the secrets of a body by Mando.

The Mandalorian Needs a Consistent Body Weight

As Wayne and Trigg reveal, specific Mandalorian suits are in short supply; this unique set of armor can't be resized after the fact. So, the regimen to make the Mandalorian body requires keeping Wayne the same size and weight.

"You have to remember that the costumes are fitted to him at the time they fit him," Trigg says. "We're making the costume, and you have to be the same size plus or minus a couple of centimeters, but no more than that, for the next nine months."

Is there a practical application for men every day for this kind of fitting? Should we all imagine ourselves in our own Mandalorian suits, needing to maintain a certain size and weight?

"One hundred percent," Trigg says. "The difference is, Brendan, has had somebody standing there and looking at him over several years, asking, 'What's your body type? What's your metabolism like? Where the everyday person only knows themselves. You have to figure out, whether you are somebody who eats a lot of food and maintains weight, or somebody who eats a little bit of food and all of a sudden weight stays on you. Sometimes people are focused on weight loss, they don't think about the skinny person who's struggling to put bulk on."

Boxing as the Secret Weapon of the Mandalorian Work Out

One massive action scene from the new film finds the Mandalorian sparring with Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White) and various other creatures in a kind of outer space gladiatorial contest. Oddly enough, this scene might represent the most accurate way to stay in shape, fighting or sparring, while wearing heavy weights.

According to Trigg and Brendan Wayne himself, much of the training is all about boxing. And if you can box while wearing the Mandalorian suit-or something similar-even better!

According to Wayne, because he had to wear a new rig for "the kid" (Baby Yoda/Grogu), he would "run every morning," but also, crucially, he had a boxing ring built for his home.

"When it came time to do the movie, I got to a certain point where I had to eat pretty clean the whole time," Wayne explains, but notes that the iconic Mandalorian armor is perhaps the fastest way to burn fat in the entire universe.

"I would recommend this to any boxer out there," Wayne says confidently. "Go out there and work out in Mando's outfit, and you too can lose weight very fast."

Is getting a body worthy of a Star Wars warrior as easy as putting on armor and boxing? Maybe, maybe not. But for the man in the suit, it's not just one way, but the way to stay in top physical condition.

  • Run two miles with a 30-pound vest
  • Ice pot soak or sauna
  • 12 rounds of hitting a heavy punching bag
  • 6 rounds of skipping rope
  • Standard weights to build muscle strength
