Meta lays off nearly 700 Bay Area workers, and twice as many in Seattle area

Meta's sweeping layoffs will affect nearly 700 Bay Area workers, adding to years of cuts in the face of massive artificial intelligence investment and overhiring during the pandemic.

The social media giant said in state filings that layoffs would affect 338 workers in Burlingame, 252 in San Francisco and 81 in Fremont - for a total of 671.

The company had even deeper cuts in the Seattle area, with nearly 1,400 local layoffs, as part of around 8,000 layoffs company-wide. Around 10% of the company's total workforce was affected.

Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, expects to spend between $115 billion and $135 billion on capital expenditures, with much of it going toward its Meta Superintelligence Labs AI research. Meta had 78,865 employees at the end of 2025, up 6% from a year earlier.

In April, Meta also cut nearly 200 jobs in Burlingame and Sunnyvale.

Separately, Intuit laid off 417 workers in California, primarily in Southern California, according to state filings. The layoffs included 50 employees in San Francisco, 90 in Woodland Hills (Los Angeles County), where its office will close, and 277 in San Diego.

Mountain View-based Intuit is cutting 17% of its workforce or around 3,000 workers.

Tech layoffs have slammed the Bay Area economy, though the unemployment rate remains relatively low as other sectors have grown. Between March and April, San Francisco and San Mateo counties lost 1,900 information sector jobs, which are predominantly tech companies, according to state data. But healthcare and private education companies added 1,700 jobs and the leisure and hospitality sector gained 800 jobs, bringing San Francisco's unemployment rate down to 3.5%.

Santa Clara and San Benito counties had a decline of 1,000 information jobs between March and April, while healthcare and private education gained 1,000 jobs and construction was up by 800 jobs. Santa Clara County had a 3.7% unemployment rate in April.
