On This Day in 1963, The Beach Boys' 'Surfin' U.S.A.' Reached No. 3 on Billboard

The Beach Boys launched their career with 1962's Surfin' Safari, which included a song of the same name as well as a track called "Surfin'." The California group was already on its way to becoming the premier surf rock voices when they released "Surfin' U.S.A.," the debut single from their second album of the same title, on March 4, 1963.

"Surfin' U.S.A." was a colossal hit, entering the Billboard Hot 100 on March 23. Two months later--and 63 years ago today--on May 25, 1963, the song reached its peak of No. 3.

"Surfin' U.S.A." wasn't done on the charts though

Altogether, the song spent 25 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. While it never climbed higher than that third spot, "Surfin' U.S.A." was still named the year-end No. 1 Hot 100 song for 1963.

In terms of weekly charts, "Surfin' U.S.A." had its best showing in Canada, where it reached No. 2. It also cracked the top 10 of the JapanCash Box chart.

The Beach Boys would go on to post four No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits--"I Get Around" (1964), "Help Me, Rhonda" (1965), "Good Vibrations" (1966) and "Kokomo" (1988).

The inspiration behind the song

The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and rock and roll legend Chuck Berry are co-credited with writing the song. That's because "Surfin' U.S.A." is a rewrite of Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen."

Wilson explained the concept during a 1974 interview on KRTH Radio.

"The concept was about, ‘They're doing this in this city, they're doing that in that city,' the Chubby Checker' Twistin' U.S.A.' concept. So I thought of calling it ‘Surfin' U.S.A,'" Wilson said, via American Songwriter. "I was going with a girl named Judy Bowles at the time, and her brother Jimmy was a surfer, and he knew all the surfing spots. I said to Jimmy, ‘I want to do a song mentioning all the surf spots.' So he made a list, and, by God, he didn't leave one out."
