Walmart Almost Never Closes - Is It Open or Closed on Memorial Day?
Memorial Day always occurs on the final Monday of May each year, and this year, Memorial Day falls a bit early, on May 25. So, if you're heading out to get last-minute items on the holiday itself, you may wonder, "Is Walmart open on Memorial Day?" or "Is Walmart closed on Memorial Day?"
By the way, the holiday is quite early this year. I've had some friendly arguments with family and friends over when the holiday lands this year, just because it seems so early that some of them thought it would be in early June instead of May 25.
But, Memorial Day is always in May, and the federal holiday creates a three-day weekend for Americans. People see the holiday as marking the unofficial beginning of summer, even though summer really starts with summer solstice, which falls on June 21 in 2026.
Is Walmart Open or Closed on Memorial Day?
Here's good news for those planning to stop by Walmart this holiday: Walmart stores will all be open regular hours on Memorial Day, according to the company. Store hours are typically 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., but check with your local store to make sure. Also, note that pharmacy and Auto Care Center hours can change during holidays, so again, it's best to check with your local store to see what services are available. But, in general, you can expect Walmart locations across the country to be available, with their doors open, on the holiday for your needs.
As for some historical background, according to research from The History Channel, Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day and began in the years following the Civil War. It's hard to believe, but it didn't even become an official federal holiday until 1971. The History Channel adds, "Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades."
"Observed on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is an annual day of remembrance to honor all those who died in service to the US during peacetime and war," the U.S. Department of Defense states.
In addition to Target, a plethora of stores are also open on Monday, including Sam's Club, Kroger, Aldi, Home Depot, Lowe's, Walgreen's and CVS. But, when you're out and about, gathering supplies for your BBQ, remember that this holiday isn't really about summertime fun. It's about thanking and sending a prayer up to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the U.S.
