Dogs thrive on routines, which is why this sweet 12-year-old senior dog named Koda looked completely heartbroken after Mom made one tiny change to her normal schedule, and his adorable confusion is melting hearts online.

Instead of taking her usual shower, Mom decided to take a bath in the separate tub across from the shower. When Koda wandered into the bathroom, he could hear Mom talking to him, but because she wasn't standing in her normal spot, he simply could not figure out where she was. The poor pup kept looking around the shower area, completely confused, seeming both lost and genuinely sad that he couldn't find her.

Why Senior Dogs Get So Attached to Daily Routines

Dogs thrive on consistency and generally feel safest when they know what to expect from their daily lives. Predictable routines help reduce stress and create a sense of comfort and security.

According to the American Kennel Club, while routines may naturally shift depending on a dog's age and health, certain things should stay consistent, including rest periods, bonding time, potty breaks, meal time, and opportunities for exercise or mental enrichment.

The AKC also notes that senior dogs can sometimes become confused or disoriented, even inside homes they've lived in for years. Maintaining familiar routines can help reduce anxiety in aging pets and may even help prevent issues like regression in potty training. They also recommend adding extra potty breaks for older dogs as needed.

That said, routines don't have to happen at exactly the same time every day. The AKC explains that consistency in the order and predictability of activities matters more than exact timing, helping dogs stay secure without becoming overly dependent on a perfectly fixed schedule.
