Oscar-Nominated Biopic 'A Complete Unknown' Starring Timothée Chalamet Coming to HBO Max

Can't get enough of Timothée Chalamet? Well, you're in luck - A Complete Unknown, the 2024 biopic in which Chalamet plays the freewheelin' Bob Dylan, will be available to stream on HBO Max starting May 27, per a press release from Warner Bros. Discovery.

After debuting in theaters on Christmas Day 2024, A Complete Unknown found its streaming home on Hulu in March 2025. But as of May 2026, the acclaimed Dylan biopic is no longer available there - or anywhere streaming, for that matter. Right now, the film is only available for rent or purchase on VOD platforms like Amazon Prime and Apple TV. When you already pay monthly for multiple streaming services, who wants to pay extra to watch something?

A Complete Unknown garnered eight Oscar nominations, including best picture, best director, best actor in a leading role for Chalamet's performance, best actor in a supporting role for Edward Norton's performance as Dylan's frenemy Pete Seeger, and best supporting actress for Monica Barabaro as Dylan's muse, Joan Baez. Despite all the nominations, the biopic didn't win any Academy Awards.

What Bob Dylan Thinks of 'A Complete Unknown'

Surely it's bizarre to see yourself portrayed on the big screen by an actor more than 50 years your junior. But Dylan has openly praised the young actor for playing him. "Timmy's a brilliant actor so I'm sure he's going to be completely believable as me," the "Like a Rolling Stone" singer wrote in a 2024 post on X. "Or a younger me. Or some other me."

Dylan went on to praise the source material that inspired the film. "The film's taken from Elijah Wald's Dylan Goes Electric – a book that came out in 2015. It's a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport," he wrote, referring to his controversial performance with electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. "After you've seen the movie read the book."
