‘Grey's Anatomy' Heads to Texas in New ABC Spin-Off
Things will soon be going South for Grey's Anatomy, with the long-running medical drama setting off from Seattle, Washington, and heading to Texas in a new spin-off series.
According to an exclusive report by Deadline released today, a currently untitled new addition to the Grey's universe will be part of ABC's 2026-2027 line-up. The straight-to-series pick-up will be co-created by Shonda Rhimes, the original show's creator and executive producer.
Ellen Pompeo, who has played lead character Meredith Grey since the show's inception back in 2005, will also executive produce the series, along with fellow Grey's showrunner Meg Marinis. The series is scheduled to premiere in midseason in 2027.
Of course, this is not the first Grey's spin-off, with the new addition following in the footsteps of Private Practice (2007–2013), Station 19 (2018–2024), as well as the web series, Grey's Anatomy: B-Team. However, according to the new announcement, it will be the first to take place outside of Seattle.
The new offshoot will follow "a team at a rural West Texas medical center - the last chance for care before miles of nowhere," according to Deadline. Additionally, the series is described as within the "edgy drama" genre, perhaps more adult than the traditional drama of the original Grey's series.
Grey's Anatomy is one of the longest-running scripted live-action shows on American television, having recently finished its 22nd season. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill, but with the original Grey's team at the helm, fans can be optimistic. Rhimes, who has gone on to produce other major shows such as Bridgerton and Scandal, will return to write for the Grey's universe since Season 11.
"I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey's Anatomy universe," co-creator Marinis said in a statement confirming the spin-off. "This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey's for more than two decades - all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it."
