Waymo plans to bring driverless rides to more Bay Area neighborhoods
Waymo plans to expand its driverless ride-hailing service deeper into the South Bay in the coming weeks.
The expansion would bring Waymo vehicles to Willow Glen and Vista Park in San Jose, and to Cupertino and Campbell. The company said the new territory would add about 60 square miles to its Bay Area service area, bringing the total to more than 330 square miles.
The move marks another step in Waymo's rapid growth in the Bay Area, where its robotaxis already operate in San Francisco and parts of Silicon Valley, including San Jose and Mineta San Jose International Airport.
The company is also expanding nationally, with plans to grow service in Atlanta, Houston and Austin in the coming weeks. Waymo said the broader rollout would bring its total service area to more than 1,400 square miles across 11 cities.
The expansion comes as San Jose and other Bay Area cities prepare for major events, including the FIFA World Cup, which is expected to bring a surge of visitors to the region starting next month.
Waymo said the larger service area would help residents and visitors get around "safely and efficiently."
"As we welcome new cities into our service, we are also deepening our investment in the communities we already serve," Shweta Srivistava, Waymo's senior product lead, said in a statement. "Our ‘land and expand' approach allows us to connect with more neighbors - ensuring we are there to support riders for everything from daily commutes and local errands to exciting nights out and the big game."
