Who was Matthew Rogers?
In Season 9 episode 6 of Little House on the Prairie, a young deaf boy named Matthew Rogers was introduced to audiences. Matthew didn’t speak at first, initially due to his trauma, but he later learned to communicate through sign language.
When he was first brought onto the series, Matthew was being held captive by the traveling snake oil salesman, Dr. Joshua McQueen, who was abusing and exploiting Matthew in a traveling circus.
Matthew first appeared in the episodes “The Wild Boy” Parts 1 and 2. He was kept in a cage and forced to perform for audiences while being poked and prodded with sticks. Dr. McQueen billed Matthew as “Wild Boy of the North” and used morphine-laced elixir to keep him aggressive for the circus. Eventually, Matthew was able to escape the abusive circus act, but he was soon found hiding in the barn of Jenny Wilder. The episodes explored themes of compassion, communication and acceptance.
Once he met the folks of Walnut Grove, Laura Ingalls Wilder began to teach Matthew sign language so that he could communicate with others. Soon enough, Matthew was taken in by Mr. Edwards after he realized he was abused and suffering from drug withdrawal.
But their time together wasn’t long, as Matthew’s biological father returned and explained that he didn’t abandon his son, rather that he was too poor to keep him. His father eventually convinced his son to leave with him and Matthew left Walnut Grove behind.
Who played Matthew Rogers?
The actor who starred from 1982 to 1983 as Matthew Rogers in five episodes of Little House on the Prairie is Jonathan Hall Kovacs. Like his character, Kovacs was a deaf actor who knew how to use sign language, so it was a natural fit when his character was learning it. The role on Little House was one of the firsts for the then 13-year-old, following only a TV movie in 1982 called The Six of Us.
Later on, Kovacs booked a minor role on the TV series, The Family Tree (1983), appearing in six episodes. He also booked an episode of General Hospital (1983), Airwolf (1985) and Gideon’s Crossing (2001). His days as a child actor are behind him, however, with the role on Gideon’s Crossing being his last. Today, the 56-year-old is still an entertainer, frequently posting videos on social media.
