Ragdoll Kitten Has No Idea He's the One Being Told To Stop Scratching
There are a lot of things our cats do that confuse us from time to time. Like, why do they jump sideways when they're in that strange super-zoom phase that only seems to happen when the window is open, and the wind is blowing out there? Or why they're so picky about how you place their food dish down for them when they've made it very clear they're so hungry they need a resolution faster than you can give. Or why every time the clock hits 2:30 in the morning, they start scratching their claws on the side of your bed, ignoring the fact that you had only just finally fallen asleep.
In this video, we meet a very cute Ragdoll cat who hears his mom call out a name in the middle of the night while he's scratching the side of her bed. But he still doesn't get it.

Angel Of The Morning - Juice Newton
Shared by @fergusthemainecoon, this TikTok video shows the second cat in the family, a Ragdoll named Conrad, causing a little disturbance in the middle of the night.
He's a cat, so he's going to do cat things, but that doesn't make waking up in the very early hours of the morning to a kitty using your bed like a nail file any easier to deal with. That's the situation Conrad was in, but when his mom called out "stopscratchingmybed" in the middle of the night, Conrad had no idea she was talking about him. And every cat parent who has a feline that's a little... spacey can definitely relate to that.

In the comments, other cat parents commiserated with Conrad's parents. Some comments included: "Omg, SAME. Except it happens ALLLL NIGHT LONG," "Daring Conrad would never," "Conrad, you're so cute," "Absolutely," and "Not ConBad."

Why Do Cats Scratch Furniture?
Conrad is far from the only kitty who scratches on the furniture at the worst possible times, knowing we won't be awake in those very early hours of the night. It's something so many cat parents have to deal with, and it's such a universal problem that there are available products to kind of "cat-scratch-proof" your couches. But have you ever wondered why they do this? There is a very legitimate reason, according to the experts.
The Toronto Humane Society explains that there are actually a few reasons cats scratch furniture, carpet, bed frames, and even wooden posts, all stemming from a natural instinct to mark their territory, stretch, and relieve stress.
The organization says the natural instinct behind a cat's scratching comes down to needing to trim their nails, really, and that when they do, it also helps them mark their territory with scent signals that help them feel secure in their space. It just so happens that doing that also ensures they get a big back stretch, which feels good, and in the end, reduces their stress.
So, Conrad, it's good that you're doing that as an outlet, and it's very cat-like of you, of course. But maybe not at 2 o'clock in the morning.
