Netflix to Add All 3 Seasons of 'Shrill', a Beloved Cancelled Hulu Comedy, on June 8

Netflix will be adding over a dozen shows to its library in June, including 11 original programs. The streaming service will also welcome Shrill, a Hulu original series which ran for three seasons from 2019-21.

According to the latest reporting from What's on Netflix, Shrill will debut on the platform Monday, June 8.

What to know about Shrill

Created by Aidy Bryant, Alexandra Rushfield and Lindy West and based on West's 2016 book Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, the comedy series stars Bryant as Annie, a journalist at The Thorn, "described as a fat young woman who wants to change her life - but not her body."

The rest of the main cast also includes:

  • Lolly Adefope as Fran, Annie's best friend
  • Luka Jones as Ryan, one of Annie's boyfriends
  • John Cameron Mitchell as Gabe Parrish, Annie's boss and the editor-in-chief of The Thorn
  • Patti Harrison as Ruthie, the receptionist at The Thorn
  • Ian Owens as Amadi, another one of Annie's close friends

Daniel Stern and Julia Sweeney play Annie's parents, with Jo Firestone, E.R. Fightmaster, Dana Millican, Connor O'Malley and others also in major roles.

What kind of reception did Shrill receive?

The show ran for 22 episodes across three seasons, ending in May 2021. KQED's Rae Alexander wrote at the time that Shrill's cancellation was "a loss" because of how it portrayed "showed cool fat women living life with grace and self-love."

Overall, Shrill has an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes--93% from its first season and 83% from Season 2. It also earned a 7.4/10 mark on IMDB and a 93% rating on Flicks.

"These ideas, a lot of the stuff around hating your own body, or wanting to not hate your own body, [are] so much a part of anyone with a body's experience. So I just know that it's a theme that's been a part of my life for a long time. And in some ways I'm not ready to say goodbye to it yet," Bryant herself said in 2021.

Currently, you can watch Shrill on Hulu and Disney+ before it arrives on Netflix in June.
