Bay Area clue stumps 'Jeopardy!' contestants

May 8-For Northern Californians, Point Reyes is an unmistakable natural landmark, one of the state's most iconic stretches of coast. Apparently, the national seashore doesn't hold the same significance for Thursday's "Jeopardy!" contestants, who found themselves stumped by a Point Reyes clue.

Data scientist Tristan Williams selected a clue from the "What's the Point!" category.

"There's a lighthouse at this national seashore that's north of San Francisco," host Ken Jennings read as the screen flashed a short panoramic video of the famed Point Reyes Lighthouse.

While some Californian viewers might have shouted the answer from their sofas, the three contestants stood blankly until the time ran out.

"It's called Point Reyes," Jennings explained before the contestants moved on to the next clue.

Bay Area-related clues occasionally pop up on the "Jeopardy!" board. Last year, some San Franciscans found themselves confused when a "Jeopardy!" clue mentioned an obscure neighborhood name, Showplace Square. (Most call it the Design District.) In 2023, a contestant failed to guess the last name of a California governor who shares his last name with a San Francisco neighborhood. (Henry Huntly Haight was the state's 10th governor.)

In their defense, Thursday's contestants are not from the West Coast. Williams hails from Nebraska, and his opponents are from even farther away. Robert Yan, a language expert, is from Huntsville, Alabama. Helen Yoas, a retired librarian, is from Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Williams still nabbed another "What's the Point!" clue, successfully recalling the Keanu Reeves film "Point Break." He won Thursday's show, making him a two-day champion.
