Palo Alto affordable housing development officially opens its doors

PALO ALTO — An affordable housing development in Palo Alto officially opened its doors Friday to new residents.

The project added 50 affordable units in a complex known as Mitchell Park Place at 525 East Charleston Rd., Santa Clara County officials stated.

Overall proposed funding for the development was $32 million, according to the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee. The agency allocates funds from state tax-exempt bonds to endeavors such as affordable housing projects.

Santa Clara County contributed $12 million.

The development provides a mix of housing geared toward people at different income levels.

Half of the units will be set aside for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the county stated. Officials said the development will help people with disabilities lead more independent lives.

“The county continues to do its part to address the housing affordability crisis that we see across our communities and across the region,” said Greta Hansen, the county’s chief operating officer.

Santa Clara County, Palo Alto, developer Eden Housing, and nonprofit AbilityPath teamed up to make the project a reality, county officials said.

AbilityPath will provide services to residents and has an office at the site. The organization supports people with disabilities and their families.
