The surprising origin of May the Fourth
While the phrase was coined thanks to the line from the 1977 movie, the May the 4th celebration didn’t actually begin for another two years.
The phrase was first written in a newspaper ad on May 4, 1979 in honor of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Party victory. The ad read, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”
But it wasn’t until years later that it gained any popularity. In the 1980s and ’90s, the phrase was used by the fans in reference to popular culture but it wasn’t until 2011 that the first organized Star Wars day took place at the Toronto Underground Cinema in Canada.
Then, 2013, when Lucasfilm was bought by Disney, they sprinkled some of their Disney magic and embraced “May the 4th” or Star Wars Day as an unofficial holiday, one now celebrated annually.
