Major Bottle Company Voluntarily Recalls 8 Million Goods After Reports of Eye Injuries
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), popular bottle and jar company Thermos has issued a voluntary recall on roughly 8 million of its products. As Thermos reported, the products are being recalled, "because if perishable food or beverages are stored in the container for an extended period of time, the stopper can forcefully eject when opened, which can result in serious impact injury and laceration hazards to the consumer."
So what incidents prompted the recall, and what products should consumers be on the lookout for? Here's all we know so far.
Thermos Recall Prompted by the Complaints of 27 Consumers
Again, according to the Thermos statement, it received 27 reports of consumers who were "struck by a stopper forcefully ejecting from the containers upon opening, including complaints of impact and laceration injuries requiring medical attention." It appears that three of these consumers, unfortunately, suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye.
What Are the Thermos Products Being Voluntarily Recalled?
The products being recalled were sold by Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Thermos directly between March 2008 and July 2024. Here is the list of recalled items that have stoppers with no pressure relief in the center:
- Thermos 16-oz Stainless King Food Jar (SK3000)
- 40-oz Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottle (SK3010)
- 24-oz Stainless King Food Jar (SK3020)
Consumers who have qualifying products have been instructed to stop using them and to contact Thermos to receive either a free replacement pressure relief stopper or a replacement model. As stated:
"For recalled 3000 and 3020 Food Jars, consumers will be asked to throw away the stopper and send a photo of the disposed stopper to Thermos. For recalled 3010 Bottles, consumers will be asked to return their recalled Bottle to Thermos using a prepaid shipping label."
