'In Utero': Nirvana's 1993 Album Ranked One of 'The Greatest Albums of All Time'
Nirvana is, without question, one of the biggest grunge acts of all time. Considered one of the "Big Four" of grunge (which includes Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden), the band broke into the mainstream with their sophomore record, Nevermind, in 1991, notably with its first single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Nirvana's music left an indelible impression on the rock scene, and they're widely regarded as "the figurehead band of Gen X."
In September 1993, the three-piece alt-rock outfit unveiled their third and final album, In Utero, which marked a departure from Nevermind's more melodic sound. The record is bolder, louder, and more abrasive in tone. While Kurt Cobain dismissed the work as impersonal, many feel it was Nirvana's most personal, with the record digging deep into themes of trauma, mental health, and fame.
While the album still holds up remarkably well, at the time, In Utero came under fire for a handful of reasons. For starters, one of its singles was considered controversial because of its explicit lyrics. The music video for "Heart-Shaped Box," the first single from In Utero, gave way to backlash due to its depiction of religious iconography and other shocking content. Even its album cover stirred up controversy.
In Utero wasn't as commercially successful as Nevermind, but it was lauded by music critics as a boundary-pushing work. Retrospectively, Rolling Stone included the album on its "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, and slotted it in at No. 8 on its "50 Greatest Grunge Albums" list.
On the charts front, In Utero peaked at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 chart, along with the UK Albums chart. It took the top spot on five other weekly global charts, and went 6x Platinum in the US.
Nirvana took a creative swing with its release of In Utero, and its raw, visceral sound certainly resonates with anyone who listens to it.
