'Imagine' by John Lennon Ranked 'Worst Song in Rock History' Despite Charting at No. 1
John Lennon's 1971 smash hit "Imagine" remains one of the most polarizing rock songs ever written-while some consider it Lennon's best work ever, others criticize it as hyprocritical and overrated.
The song was Lennon's first major hit following the breakup of The Beatles- the band with which he'd risen to fame throughout the '60s. Their dissolution had been an extremely public and fragile one, so expectations for Lennon's "comeback" song couldn't have been higher.
Thankfully, "Imagine" turned out to be an enormous commercial hit. It went straight to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and would later peak at No. 1 on the U.K. Singles Chart following Lennon's death in 1980.
The song discusses the influence of war, materialism, and religion on the modern world, inviting the listener to imagine a world without these things and consider the peace and harmony we may experience as a result.
While the song was envisioned as a call to peace, many listeners throughout the years have taken issue with Lennon's apparent calls for equality while remaining incredibly wealthy and maintaining his material posessions.
On a ranking collated by The Vinyl District, Lennon's "Imagine" was named the "worst song in rock history", with the author claiming that "Lennon isn't asking us to dream, he's asking us to ignore the human condition, and to add insult to injury he insists it's a cinch."
"Can we imagine no possession? No self-respecting two-year-old could (or would want to), and neither could John-ask him to give his iconic white baby grand piano to the bum on the next block and he'd have squawked like a seagull denied a french fry. Cynics have hearts (they're what make them so cynical) but also have heads. And they use them."
A harsh criticism, but not a new one. The critical acclaim for "Imagine" isn't going anywhere-it remains at No. 19 on Rolling Stone's ranking of the greatest songs ever recorded-but it's always been a subject of controversy ever since its release. After living a rock and roll lifestyle with the Beatles and moving to an expensive penthouse apartment in New York City, John Lennon arguably wasn't the best person to imagine what life is like for the average person.
Still, "Imagine" was the best-selling single of Lennon's entire solo career, and remains the track that he's most strongly remembered for. The track sold over 1.7 million copies in the United Kingdom alone, and has been covered by over 200 artists since its release.
