Asia Live food emporium sets Valley Fair opening date
Westfield Valley Fair, the home of Northern California's only Eataly food hall, will welcome the highly anticipated Asia Live culinary emporium in a little over a month.
The couple behind the venture - noted restaurateurs George Chen and Cindy Wong-Chen of San Francisco’s China Live - said Monday they plan to open the Santa Clara mall project on June 1.
"Asia Live is the next natural step in our journey," founder-chef Chen said in the announcement, noting the concept will offer contemporary takes on the traditional dishes of Greater China, Southeast Asia, India, Korea and Japan for Bay Area residents and international visitors. “San Francisco was our foundation and Silicon Valley gives us a new stage to share that story."
The 15,000-square-foot space, set over two levels - with a rooftop terrace to come at a later date - will feature restaurants and bars, a retail marketplace and cooking stations for interactive experiences. Diners will be able to watch chefs fill dumplings, for example, roll sushi and make curry.
Two starring dishes on the Valley Fair menu will be his S.F. bestsellers - Sheng Jian Bao, the pork dumplings, and the Peking Duck, roasted and served with a seasonal fruit glaze.
Sue Newsom, the mall’s senior general manager, noted that the Asia Live opening will be significant because Valley Fair is not just a shopping destination, but also a dining destination. The emporium will join a long lineup of Asian restaurants there that includes Din Tai Fung, Ramen Nagi, Koja Kitchen, Marugame Udon, AnQi Shaken & Stirred, Baekjeong Korean BBQ, Habitant, IJ Sushi Burrito, Tai Er Sichuan, Ruby Thai, Sarku Japan, Ox 9 Lanzhou Pulled Noodles, Onigilly Japanese Kitchen, along with several casual cafes and beverage shops.
