Creatine Gummy Company Sued Over False Labels

Create Wellness, Inc. is being sued by a man named John Connolly over false advertising and label claims on their creatine gummy product. Independent lab testing found the gummies actually contain about 10-20% less creatine than advertised.

A three gummy serving is supposed to have 4.5g of creatine, however testing showed that it only had about 4g.

Knowledgeable supplement users are probably not surprised to hear this for a variety of reasons. Supplement companies in general have dealt with lawsuits over label claims for years. In addition, gummies are notoriously difficult to properly dose. This is especially true for creatine gummies, since creatine is unstable in liquid and there is some water in gummies.

You may be reading this and thinking: what's the big difference between 4.5g and 4g?

If you're talking about the benefits you would get from supplementing creatine, you're right. It's highly unlikely you'd see a noticeable difference over half a gram. But it's a matter of principle. As a consumer, you should know what you're getting in a product you spend money on.

According to the Create Wellness website, their products are third-party tested and NSF certified. If the independent testing in this lawsuit is accurate, this would be problematic on a number of levels. It's this sort of thing that gives supplements a bad name. Supplements are an unregulated industry to a certain degree, but you still have to play by the rules.

Create Wellness has raised over $20 million in funding and sold millions of gummies. They're not a small operation cutting corners in a garage. Consumers, and investors, will be watching closely to see how they respond.
