Vallejo's Dia Del Nino celebrates children

With lucha libre wrestlers, a folklórico group from Vallejo High School, fire trucks, and tractors, Vallejo's annual Dia Del Nino had entertainment both for and by kids at Children's Wonderland Sunday.

The phrase means "Day of the Child," and about 500 were in attendance, organizers said. Dia del Niño is celebrated in Mexico, El Salvador, and throughout Central and South America, and Vallejo's population is around 30 percent Hispanic, according to the U.S. Census.

Jumpy houses, face painting, Ballet Quetzali, and Ballet Nekzayolin were also on tap at the free event. The Vallejo High School SER Latino folklórico group delivered a performance that highlighted the cultural significance of the event, according to Mina Loera-Diaz, one of the organizers.

Ballet Folklórico is a traditional Mexican dance blending indigenous, Spanish, and African influences to represent regional culture, history, and folklore.

"SER" stands for Service Education Resources Latino. The program at Vallejo High focuses on empowering Latino students and their families through education, mentorship, and access to resources, according to Jessica Gonzalez, bilingual community liaison at the Vallejo City Unified School District.

Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce and City Council Member Alexander Matias attended Dia del Niño. The mayor presented a proclamation honoring the event.

"Dia del Niño is more than a day of joy and festivities; it serves as a profound acknowledgment of the importance of children in our society and our collective responsibility to nurture their well-being, education, and cultural heritage," the proclamation read in part.

Loera-Diaz said that the event "continues to grow as a meaningful tradition that brings families together and reminds the community of its shared responsibility to uplift, support, and celebrate children."

The City of Vallejo, the Greater Vallejo Recreation District, Eric Reyes Foundation, Nuevos Caminos, Diaz Loera Centro Latino, Project Blessing Bags, former Vice Mayor Mina Loera-Diaz, Mildred Gains, Isabel Reyes, and Jessica Gonzalez collaborated to produce the event.
