Beloved Department Store is Closing Locations Across 12 States

The landscape of American malls is shifting once again as Macy's officially enters the next phase of its "Bold New Chapter" strategy. The 165-year-old retail icon has confirmed the closure of 14 additional locations this spring, a move that impacts communities across 12 different states.

The announcement comes as part of a broader mandate issued by CEO Tony Spring to "reinvigorate relationships with customers" by stripping away underperforming assets. By the end of 2026, Macy's aims to have eliminated 150 stores - nearly a third of its fleet - to focus on a smaller, more profitable core of high-traffic locations.

Macy's Store Closings Happening in April

Shoppers in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, are the first to feel the weight of this round. The Pittsburgh Mills location, which has anchored its local mall since 2005, will officially cease operations on April 26, 2026. Staff at the location have reportedly been selling off everything down to the shelving units as the store prepares for its final day of service.

While Macy's has stated that "closing a store is never an easy decision," the company maintains that the move is essential to surviving a "retail apocalypse" that has already claimed thousands of storefronts in 2026.
