These 4 Tips for Preventing Back Problems in Dachshunds Are So Important
Dachshunds are more likely to develop intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) than other breeds, which is why caring for their back health is key for dachshund parents. Recently, Roswell Weenie shared four tips on YouTube Shorts for keeping doxies' backs safe, and each one is so important.

1. Use Ramps Whenever Possible
First, using a ramp whenever you can is a great way to prevent back problems in dachshunds. Scenarios when you can use a ramp for your doxie include your bed, the couch, your entryway steps or even the car.
2. Carry Them Down the Stairs
Carrying your dachshund down the stairs is another way to prevent back problems. This is because stairs, especially when traveling down, put more strain on their long backs. Carrying them instead will protect them from this.

3. Pick Them Up and Carry Them Correctly
The way you hold your dachshund can also help prevent back problems down the line. The proper way to hold a dachshund is to pick them up by placing one hand under their chest and your other hand underneath their bottom. From there, slowly lift the dog while keeping their body level. Make sure you continue to support their back as you continue to hold them.
To set your dachshund down, slowly lower them to the floor. Never let them jump down from your arms, as this can cause unnecessary strain on their back.
4. Exercise Daily and Keep Them at a Healthy Weight
Finally, making sure your dachshund gets enough daily exercise is important to keeping them strong and healthy. This also helps them maintain a healthy weight, which can lessen the chance of back issues. Talk with your vet about your dog's specific exercise and weight requirements.
