One of Tahoe's biggest ski areas will reopen this weekend

One of Tahoe's largest ski areas, closed for nearly two weeks, will reopen to skiing and snowboarding this weekend.

Following an exceptionally dry and warm winter that made it tough for Sierra ski areas to keep snow on the ground, Heavenly, like most Tahoe ski areas, had opted to close earlier than usual - on April 5.

But a spate of cold temperatures and storms this month, including a burst of 2 feet of snowfall last weekend, has allowed the South Lake Tahoe resort to reopen for two final days: Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19.

In a Friday announcement, Heavenly called it "an unexpected encore" to the season and described the event as "a rare reopening and a final chance for a thank-you lap to celebrate Heavenly's 70th anniversary season."

The only mountain access will be the gondola, which picks up in downtown South Lake Tahoe near the Nevada border. Terrain will be limited, the resort said.

Most Tahoe ski areas are closed, but Palisades, Mt. Rose and Kirkwood are remaining open through this weekend.
