Steph Curry Isn't the Greatest Shooter Ever

The Golden State Warriors surprised the world by upsetting the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA play-in tournament on Wednesday night. Backed by Steph Curry's 35 points and a clutch three-pointer with under one minute left, the Dubs advanced to the final round of the play-in stage against the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

Curry's wizardry never gets old. Even after 17 years in the NBA, the Golden State point guard keeps adding to his laundry list of heroic moments. And after every big game or major record he shatters, the same redundant compliment is posted on social media.

Look, it's nice to reaffirm the obvious when Curry does something special for the gazillionth time in his career. But making the claim that his best skill stands tall above the rest of the league is just a way to avoid a bigger discussion around his legacy.

Steph Curry has far removed himself from the "best shooter ever" talk. His four championships, two MVPs, Finals MVP, and almost two decades at the top level in the NBA make him one of the best players in the history of the game. Calling him the "best shooter ever" reduces the rest of his skills to an afterthought, and it's almost disrespectful at this point.

Curry galvanizes his teammates in a way few others can. He has enhanced the careers of so many other great players because his gravity opens up the court for everyone else. He's a willing passer who always tries to make the right play, regardless of whether other players would chuck more shots when they have his scoring ability.

Other players don't get defined by just one skill. They don't just call Magic Johnson the best passer in NBA history. They don't just call Michael Jordan the best dunker in NBA history. They don't just call Larry Bird the most intelligent player in history. They address these men as the best ever to play the game. Steph Curry must be talked about the same way. When you compliment him on his best skill, you're just trying to ignore that he's surpassed your favorite player as an overall hooper.
