Stray Senior Dog Arrives at Shelter-Staff Not Prepared for Microchip Result
A senior dog is getting a second chance at life after being discovered on the side of a six-lane intersection in Las Vegas.
A good Samaritan and supporter of Hearts Alive Village, an animal rescue in Nevada, brought in a senior dog, Isabelle, after spending two days attempting to safely trap her, Instagram user @jackpotpaws, who works with the rescue, told Newsweek. Given the dangerous and heavily trafficked location where she was found, the team thought it was a “miracle” she survived.
Once safely secured, Isabelle was transported to the rescue organization, where staff immediately scanned her for a microchip, and for a brief moment, it looked like her story would end with a straightforward reunion.
But when the team made contact with the listed owner, they learned Isabelle had been missing for two months. Her owner explained that because of her own declining health, she could no longer take care of Isabelle, leaving the dog in the shelter’s care.
Last week’s Instagram video posted to @jackpotpaws showed Isabelle entering the animal shelter, visibly shaking with fear and confusion. She hid under the doggy bed and avoided eye contact. While it broke the team’s hearts to see her nervously accepting her fate, the text on the clip explained that this is how it often looks when owners surrender their pets.
A study on shelter animal welfare published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science indicates that kennels can be highly stressful environments for dogs because of constant noise, unfamiliar handling and loss of routine, all of which can contribute to elevated anxiety and stress-related behaviors.
Isabelle, luckily, did not stay too long in the shelter.
“We had her at one of our shelter locations for eight days,” the worker said. “She was transported to our Everyday Adoption Center at the PetSmart in Henderson, where she was groomed…”
There, everything seemed to align quickly. A woman spotted her the same day and fell in love, adopting her on the spot.
Within a week, Isabelle’s story had reached more than 239,000 views, 1,159 comments and 318 reposts on Instagram.
“It just breaks my heart to see a dog so sad and confused -alone in a cage,” one viewer wrote.
Another added: “So glad she was adopted since the video. Hope she has her happily ever after.”
A third person said: “Thank goodness someone took her!!! What a precious little soul.”
