New reads include book on pot farming, blondes who attack

The Fresno County Library’s Bookshelf column shares suggestions for books, music, and other items, and provides information about library programs.

Most Requested Books

▪ “X,” by Sue Grafton.

▪ “The Girl on the Train,” by Paula Hawkins.

▪ “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,” by Marie Kondo.

▪ “14th Deadly Sin,” by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro.

▪ “All the Light We Cannot See: A Novel,” by Anthony Doerr.

New Arrivals

▪ “Big Weed: An Entrepreneur’s High-Stakes Adventures in the Budding Legal Marijuana Business,” by Christian Hageseth, with Joseph D’Agnese. A memoir from the founder of Denver’s highly successful Green Man Cannabis. Everything from financing and sales to developing a marijuana winery (or “weedery”) is detailed.

▪ “The Invention of Fire,” by Bruce Holsinger. Medieval detective John Gower, last seen in “A Burnable Book,” embarks on a new adventure. When he finds a cluster of 16 bodies with “handgonne” wounds, he prowls London’s mean streets for answers.

▪ “The Blondes,” by Emily Schultz. Thriller, satire and science fiction blend in this remarkable novel. For no apparent reason, blonde women are attacking strangers on the New York streets — and worse yet, it’s fast turning into an epidemic.

Summer Reading

▪ “The Forgotten Room: A Novel,” by Lincoln Child. When noted scientist Willard Strachey commits suicide, “enigmatologist” Jeremy Logan isn’t so sure it’s an act of free will. On his way to the truth, he unearths a slew of dark secrets and mysterious tales.

▪ “God Help the Child,” by Toni Morrison. From the Nobel Prize-winning author, a new story of mother-daughter tensions, family ties that help and hurt, and the paths toward meaning and redemption we all seek in our lives.

▪ “The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief and Manipulation,” by Melissa Rivers. The late comedian’s inside story, related affectionately (and sometimes critically) by her daughter.
