About the district
District 5 includes many neighborhoods in southeast Fresno including Roosevelt and parts of Huntington, the older neighborhoods south of Ventura/Kings Canyon, incorporated parts of Calwa and Sunnyside, and the newer neighborhoods of Fancher Creek.
About the candidates
Luis Chavez is the incumbent, after winning 61% of the vote against television anchor Paula Yang in 2018. Prior to serving on the city council, Chavez served as the chief of staff for Sal Quintero, former District 5 councilmember; he was also a trustee for the Roosevelt High area of Fresno Unified School District.
Brandon Vang is a member and board president of the Sanger Unified Board of Trustees. He has represented the Sunnyside area of Sanger Unified as a trustee since 2016.
