This week in Fresnoland: It’s #givingnewsday!

Good afternoon.

This week in Fresnoland, Cassandra wrote about a new affordable housing development coming to Blackstone and Clinton avenues and Danielle reported on what it’s like to live in Fresno without a car.

It’s Danielle, executive director for Fresnoland here.

Today is #givingnewsday!

We’re just $300 away from meeting our goal for $2,000 today — can you help us get there?

Fresnoland is a nonprofit news organization that partners with The Fresno Bee to deliver free, public service journalism for and with the residents of the central San Joaquin Valley.

This year, we have:

  • Held a local landlord — along with the City of Fresno —- accountable for making sure renters aren’t living in horrifying conditions

  • Provided several guides to help people navigate constantly changing eviction protections and rental assistance

  • Gone deep to explain the roots of Madera County’s groundwater crisis, and what is being done

  • Reported on the transportation challenges for Fresno County residents less likely to own a car, and how Measure C — our local sales tax — has affected them

  • Held Fresno County officials accountable for moving social services out of West Fresno to Clovis

We’ve heard loud and clear from our readers that they’d like us to continue explaining complicated policies and issues and holding local leaders and institutions accountable in 2022.

At the Lemoore City Council meeting on Nov. 16, Documenter Ramiro Merino reported that the Council approved awarding the SB-1 Street Improvements contract, including repairing ADA curbs, bicycle lane, pavement, sidewalk and repairing the crosswalks -- to Don Berry Construction in the amount of $658,969.20. The money is generated through the fuel tax and a portion of vehicle fees that is then redistributed to municipalities to improve, maintain, and complete street improvements. This project. The Council also authorized a contract amendment with Tyler Technologies for conversion assistance with a third party vendor, Koa Hills, for the cost of $80,640. This will occur in multiple phases and be paid out in several fiscal years. The first redistricting meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. Read here for more info.
