Waka Flocka Flame, the Expendables headline 51Fifty Music Festival
Energy drink maker 51FIFTY is making a move into the Valley’s music scene with announcement of the 51Fifty Music Festival.
The all-day festival takes place Wednesday, June 18 at the Rotary Amphitheater at Woodward Park and features a solid lineup of hip hop and reggae acts. Tickets for the festival are $20 and on sale Friday, April 15.
This is a two-pronged concert experience.
A hip-hop stage will run from noon to 5 p.m., with Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame, emcee/activist Immortal Technique, Mendota native Baby Bash and “Buzzin’ ” rapper Shwayze. A reggae stage kick off at 5 p.m. with Santa Cruz’s The Expendables and the Southern California band Common Kings. The Expendables played a two-night stint at Strummer’s last April.
A portion of the proceeds for the show will benefit “Race to End the Stigma,” a campaign the company started to raise awareness about mental health issues.
51FIFTY recently came under fire from mental health advocates who say the name is offensive. The stir caused Save Mart to briefly pull the drink from its shelves.
The company had planned a similar festival last year, but it was postponed because of performers’ scheduling.
