Riders in the Sky, Peppino D’Agostino play Tower Theatre this weekend

Fresno’s Tower Theatre proves itself as one of the most eclectic concert venues in town with a pair of weekend concerts.

The comedy cowboy troupe Riders in the Sky performs at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29. The Grammy-winning band is known for colorful costuming and playing music “the cowboy way” – a phrase the band coined in the late 1970s. These are revival Western tunes in the vein of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. The band is so influenced by those early acts, it released a tribute to the King of the Cowboys (as Rogers was known) in April. The 14-track albums includes Rogers hits like “Yellow Rose of Texas” and “Happy Trails (To You).”

Acoustic guitar icon Peppino D’Agostino plays the theater the following night, 8 p.m. Saturday Jan. 30.

The Italian native defined acoustic guitar music in the 1980s as a composer, arranger and songwriter. He is the guitarist’s guitarist, having been voted best acoustic guitarist (in Guitar Player magazine in 2007). His album “Every Step of the Way” was named one of the best acoustic albums of all time (in Acoustic Guitar magazine in 2008). Here, D’Agostino is joined by drum virtuoso Jeff Campitelli.

Campitelli, best known for his work with Joe Satriani, is one of Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest drummers of all time.
