Fulton 55 celebrates five years with two weekend shows

When Fulton 55 opened on the corner of Fulton and Divisadero streets in 2011, it seemed like the right venue at the right time. At 7,500 square feet and with a capacity of 500, it would serve as a proving ground for local acts and a nice stopping point for mid-level touring bands traveling through California.

Still, the opening was met with skepticism. There were questions about noise and traffic and about the addition of another bar in the area. Neighborhood meetings were held, and the venue hosted its opening weekend as an all-ages event because it wasn’t able to acquire its liquor license in time.

Over five years, the venue has proved its original intent, hosting hip local bands (40 Watt Hype, Fierce Creatures) and drawing popular touring acts from across genres (Sir Mix-a-Lot, Dinosaur Jr., Tab Benoit).

“It’s had its ups and downs,” says general manager Tony Martin. “The ups have outweighed the downs.”

The venue celebrates its fifth anniversary with two nights of local music. On Friday, Jan. 22, Cat Cave productions hosts a cross-genre showcase that includes Roach Collection, Carl Armada, Beastmaker, Cloudship, Sharks Of Dance, Magikal Orgasmic Funk Overload, Truly Artistik, L of Hyrule and Kalioner.

Saturday, Jan. 23, will be headlined by two bands that have a history with the club – Fresno ska legends Let’s Go Bowling (which played Fulton 55’s opening weekend) and the hip-hop funk band 40 Watt Hype (which set the club’s attendance record). Also on the bill for the night are indie band Sampson Simpson and the hip-hop group Sagey.

The weekend is indicative of the venue’s dedication to the local scene, Martin says. Throughout the year, the club hosts Wednesday and Thursday night showcases and works to get local support on every show when possible. It’s a great way to discover local talent, Martin says. One example: Sagey, whom he first heard during one of the local showcases.

“Not only did they bring a good crowd, but they were bad-ass,” he says. “This town has always had incredibly talented musicians and it never seems like there are enough places for these acts to play.”
