Metalachi, Mariachi Sol De Mexico offer twists on traditional music
Two concerts offer distinct twists on traditional mariachi music.
Mariachi Sol De Mexico offers its Merri-Achi Christmas show on Friday, Dec. 11, at Visalia’s Fox Theater. The 13-piece Grammy-nominated ensemble plays a collection of Christmas songs and carols from both sides of the border. Since forming in 1981, the band (led by musician, composer and educator Jóse Hernàndez) has performed and recorded Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson, the Beach Boys, Jose Feliciano, Juan Gabriel and Vicente Fernandez. Its songs have been featured in several films, including “Seabiscuit,” “American Me” and “Glory Road.”
Meanwhile, the aptly named metal-infused mariachi band Metalachi makes its return trip to Fresno, playing Fulton 55 on Saturday, Dec. 12. The Los Angeles group plays up its metal image with Mad Max-inspired costumes and over-the-top live shows. Over the past few years, Metalachi has gained local fans with a multitude of shows (including return engagements at Arte Américas). The band gained national attention in June for its spot on the NBC competition show “America’s Got Talent.” The band did a trumpet-and-violin heavy version of Twisted Sister’s classic hit “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”
