Red Sun Rising may be the sound of the new alternative. It’s a young Akron, Ohio, rock band with roots in the classics, influenced by the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Tool, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains.

This is a band on the rise. Its single “The Otherside” sits at No. 2 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart. It peaked at No. 1. The song was also at the top of Mediabase’s active rock airplay chart last month. For context, Breaking Benjamin, Pop Evil, Chris Cornell and Shinedown rounded out the Top 5. The band’s album, “Polyester Zeal,” was released in August on Razor and Tie Records.

Over the past two years Red Sun Rising built a following the old-fashioned way, through touring. That includes opening spots for Sevendust, Seether, Shinedown, Chevelle and now, Godsmack. It stops in Fresno at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Saroyan Theatre.
