Artist You Should Know: Pop-singer M! releases EP

M! chooses to not go by his given name. Rather, he uses the lettered exclamation as a moniker for his androgynous pop-singer performer-self.

“It’s almost like a symbol, but you can also pronounce it. It’s Mhmm,” he says, drawing out the sound in a mimic of the yoga chant “om.”

“I really love the vibration of it.”

The basics: M! is a Fresno-based pop artist whose performances are heavy with bright costumes, dramatic wigs and heartfelt body movements. Musically, M! is rooted in piano-driven singer songwriting, with clear influences from Coldplay (and singer Chris Martin, in particular).

Releases: M! released “Let’s Get Drunk Anyway,” his first single, with a lyric video earlier this month. His debut EP, “This is M!,” will be released Thursday, Oct. 29, in conjunction with a video premiere party at Fulton 55.

Affiliations: For the release, M! teamed up with Studio 707 and Jukebawks, a local producer mostly known for his work with hip-hop artists such as Fashawn, Sahab and Zee Will. For guidance on vocal delivery, he looked to vocal coach Debi Ruud at The Voice Shop in Fresno’s Tower District.
