Karla Kane, The Corner Laughers’ ukelele playing leader/singer wears cat-eye glasses, goes birdwatching and write songs about Matilda Effect (in which female scientists get overlooked in favor of their male colleagues). The sum of this might lead some to lump The Corner Laughers in as your stereotypical Bay Area hipster-twee band.

But the band’s music is both bookish and badass.

Described as a “West Coast Belle and Sebastian,” its brand of intelligently raucous indie-pop also appeals to fans of XTC, let’s say.

The Corner Laughers plays its first Fresno show, Saturday, Oct. 10, with the city’s own quirky pop-rockers Blake Jones and the Trike Shop.
